Armand Larive Middle School Assistant Principal Juan Rodriguez has been selected to serve on the Oregon Department of Education’s Latino/a/x Advisory Committee, which will advise ODE on educational matters affecting Latino/a/x students and families, in an effort to address systemic inequities experienced by these students, through focused investments and community partnerships.
Rodriguez applied to serve on the committee. The process included an application form and a letter of interest, in which he outlined his experience, explained issues affecting this subgroup of students in the Hermiston community, and shared insights as to why he wanted to serve. Rodriguez may serve two 2-year terms.
“The Hermiston Latino/a/x population continues to grow, and we need to find a way to best support these families and students,” said Rodriguez. “I was a first-generation college student and a naturalized citizen. My path to where I am now is not too dissimilar to many of our students. I hope that my service will give me the ability to understand more of what families need, not just in my own community but statewide.”
The Latino/a/x Advisory Committee, part of ODE’s priorities under the Student Success Act (SSA), depicts ODE’s commitment to improving access and opportunities for Latino/a/x and MesoAmerican Indigenous students. In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, ODE states that this group of students is experiencing disproportionate impacts due to health, social, and economic effects of the virus, which is compounding inequities already facing these students.
Rodriguez grew up in HSD schools and graduated in 2005 from Hermiston High School. He is married to Amanda, a West Park Elementary School teacher, and they have three students Sofia (11), Jakoby (9), and Kamila (5). This is his 11th year working for HSD.

El subdirector de la Escuela Secundaria Armand Larive, Juan Rodríguez, ha sido seleccionado para servir en el Comité Consultivo Latino/a/x del Departamento de Educación de Oregon, el cual aconsejará a ODE en asuntos educativos que afectan a los estudiantes y familias latinos/a/x, en un esfuerzo por abordar las inequidades sistémicas experimentadas por estos estudiantes, a través de inversiones enfocadas y asociaciones comunitarias.
Rodríguez aplicó para ser parte del comité. El proceso incluyó una solicitud y una carta de interés, en la que delineó su experiencia, explicó cuestiones que afectan a este subgrupo de estudiantes de la comunidad de Hermiston, y compartió ideas sobre por qué quería servir. Rodríguez puede cumplir dos plazos de 2 años.
"La población Latino/a/x de Hermiston sigue creciendo, y necesitamos encontrar la mejor manera de apoyar a estas familias y estudiantes," dijo Rodríguez. "Yo era un estudiante universitario de primera generación y un ciudadano naturalizado. Mi camino hacia donde estoy ahora no es demasiado diferente de muchos de nuestros estudiantes. Espero que mi servicio me dé la capacidad de entender más de lo que las familias necesitan, no sólo en mi propia comunidad, sino en todo el estado."
El Comité Consultivo Latino/a/x, es parte de las prioridades de ODE bajo la Ley del Éxito del Estudiante (por sus siglas en inglés SSA), describe el compromiso de ODE para mejorar el acceso y las oportunidades para los estudiantes indígenas latinos/a/x y mesoamericanos. A la luz de la pandemia COVID-19, ODE afirma que este grupo de estudiantes está experimentando impactos desproporcionados debido a los efectos de salud, sociales y económicos del virus, que está agravando las desigualdades que ya enfrentan estos estudiantes.
Rodríguez creció en las escuelas de HSD y se graduó en el 2005 de la Preparatoria de Hermiston. Está casado con Amanda, maestra de la Escuela Primaria West Park, y tienen tres estudiantes Sofía (11), Jakoby (9) y Kamila (5). Este es su undécimo año trabajando para HSD.
